Directorate of Mines and Minerals
  • The Directorate of Mines and Minerals is a multidisciplinary technical organization to monitor systematic and scientific exploration and exploitation of mineral resource of the State, to promote mineral based industries, to encourage employment generation and to increase revenue earning.
  • It carries out geological study, detail exploration and drilling work to establish mineral deposits, viz., Rock Phosphate, Tungsten, Base-metal, China Clay, Fire Clay, Blackstone, Quartz, Feldspar, Dolomite, Limestone, Talc-Steatite etc. at different parts of West Bengal, mainly in Purulia, Bankura, Birbhum, Darjeeling, Kalimpong and P. Medinipur districts.
  • It processes PL/ML applications and forwards the same to ICE Department with recommendation for disposal.
  • Till date more than 5020 Mine Plans processed for obtaining Environment Clearance.
  • DMM launched its website in July, 2012 (www.dmm.gov.in).
  • Royalty collection on Coal Bed Methane (CBM) (from 2014-15 to 2018-19) is Rs. 138.83 crore.
  • MoU signed among DMM, Mineral Exploration Corporation limited (MECL) and National Mining Exploration Trust (NMET) for giving assignments to MECL to undertake geological prospecting work from NMET fund in 2018.
  • Active participation in formulation of WBMMC Rules, 2016; WB Mineral (Auction) Rules, 2016; WB DMF Rules, 2016 and DSR format.
  • As member the officials of DMM take regular active role in State Level Technical Committee (SLTC), National Mineral Exploration Trust (NMET), District Environment Assessment Committee (DEAC), District level Task Force to prevent illegal mining etc.
  • Through the State Geological Programming and Advisory Board (SGPAB, WB), this Directorate co-ordinates among all organisations like GSI, ONGCL, ECL, CMPDIL, MECL, WBMDTCL who undertake geological explorations to locate mineral deposits within the State of West Bengal and organisations like Indian Bureau of Mines (IBM) who maintains the repository of mining data.
